What makes a good website? 15 things that matter
Your website works for you around the clock as shop window, salesperson and first impression. A great one is not just flashy graphics or clever code. Strategy, design, technology and content all have to work together toward a clear goal. These are the 15 characteristics we look for in every project.
The short version
- Start with a clear purpose and an easy-to-use structure.
- Make it fast, mobile-friendly and secure.
- Write useful content and make it findable.
- Be accessible and respect people’s privacy.
- Guide visitors to one clear next step.
1. A clear purpose and strategy
Before design or code, decide why the site exists, who it is for, what you want visitors to do and how you will measure it. A local plumber chasing emergency calls and an online shop chasing add-to-cart clicks need very different sites. Most failed projects fail at this step, not in the build.
2. Intuitive navigation and UX
Visitors should find what they need without thinking. Keep the menu short, use plain words, and keep it identical on every page. If a key page takes more than a few clicks to reach, the structure needs work.
3. Professional visual design
People judge a site in a fraction of a second. Generous whitespace, a restrained colour palette, readable type with strong contrast and real imagery build trust. Cluttered or dated design makes people doubt the business behind it.
4. Content that earns attention
Design gets people in the door; content makes them stay. Write clearly, answer the questions your audience actually has, break text into short sections with real headings, and proofread. Typos cost credibility.
5. Fast loading
Speed is part of the experience. Oversized images, heavy scripts and weak hosting are the usual causes. Compress images, use modern formats, remove what you do not need, and test with Google PageSpeed Insights.
6. Mobile-first responsiveness
Most visits now happen on a phone, and search engines judge the mobile version first. Text must be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap and layouts built for small screens before large ones.
7. Security
Use HTTPS, strong unique admin passwords, regular updates and backups. A breach destroys trust faster than anything else, and browsers warn visitors away from sites without a certificate.
8. Accessibility
A good site works for everyone, including people using screen readers or only a keyboard. Add alt text, keep contrast high, label forms properly and make sure everything can be reached without a mouse. It is also better design for all users.
9. On-page SEO
A beautiful site nobody finds does no work. Research what your audience searches for, write clear page titles and descriptions, use headings in a logical order and link related pages together.
10. Clear calls to action
Every page should lead somewhere. Use visible buttons with specific wording such as “Get a free quote” rather than “Submit”, and place them where a visitor is ready to act.
11. A consistent brand
Logo, colours, type, imagery and tone of voice should feel the same on every page. Consistency builds recognition and makes a small business look established.
12. Social proof
Testimonials, reviews, case studies and recognisable logos show that real people trust you. Place them near decisions, such as next to a booking button or price.
13. Reliable hosting
Hosting is the foundation. Slow or unreliable servers undermine even the best site. Look for good uptime, built-in security, backups and support you can actually reach.
14. Room to grow
A website is a living thing. Choose a setup that lets you add pages, a blog or a shop later without a rebuild, and that your team can update without breaking the design.
15. Legal compliance and privacy
Tell visitors what data you collect and why, ask for consent where required, and keep the information safe. In South Africa that means respecting POPIA; elsewhere GDPR and similar laws may apply. Clear privacy information also builds trust.
Putting it together
A good website is not one single thing. It is these fifteen qualities working in concert: a strategic tool, an inclusive space, a fast machine and a piece of branding all at once. You do not need to fix everything at once. Start with purpose, speed and mobile, then work through the rest.
